It Does Not Pay to Be Ignorant

Today, cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the world.

For those of us living in a developing country, cancer is now not an uncommon disease. Most of us do know of people, friends or family members, who suffered from this dreadful disease. For some cancer patients, they may end up being happy survivors after treatments while others suffered a peaceful or horrible death. They died either because of the disease or the treatment!

Our experience showed us that most cancer patients and their family members are often ignorant of what they are facing. For most patients, after being diagnosed with cancer, their initial reaction is to panic as their world turns upside down. This is understandable. But let me tell you: Your world has not ended yet. There is still hope if you want to help yourself.

The late Bill Henderson, in the foreword of the book, Killing Cancer – Not People wrote:

  • In my 12 years of helping cancer patients heal themselves, I become more convinced every day that there is only one reason people die of cancer. It is the lack of information. There is no more important message to learn and teach your loved ones that only you can heal yourself.

In the years of helping cancer patients, I come to understand that it does not pay to be ignorant. It does not help to say I don’t know. It is good and helpful if you can spend some time to learn to know. The new knowledge that you gain may even save your life or at the very least make your life better when confronting your cancer.

Unfortunately, from our experiences dealing with many cancer patients and their loved ones, we come to learn that most of them do not want to read and do not want to learn more on how to help themselves. More often they like to be spoon-fed with instant information without having to do anything themselves.

Yes, we fully understand that if you already have cancer, you may feel you don’t have time to read anymore! Reading is not your priority. Getting yourself treated as soon as possible is what you thought is most important. While this reasoning is reasonable, sometimes it may turn out to be a mistake! Most patients have this idea, I have the experts to advise me. They should know better. So, there is no need for me to waste my time or energy to learn. Some other patients would say, I can go to the best doctor in the best hospital. I am in good hands. Why do I need to read?

Hear what Dr. Edward Creagan, an oncologist at Mayo Clinic said (in How Not to Be My Patient):

  • Too often, medical decisions fall into a gray area where the best choice for any individual maybe unclear and where reasonable people might choose differently. If you are to become an empowered patient, you must go into the medical arena armed with information because you simply cannot expect to get that from your doctor.
    • The goal is to make an informed choice yourself and not rely solely on the doctor to get you there, because the doctor simply can’t.
    • · Some patients still believe that the doctor knows best. We don’t. Doctors can make mistakes. You can guard against being an innocent victim.
